Angelina Jolie Pitt: ‘Crimes against women must be punished’

Angelina Jolie Pitt today said “there is no stable future for a world in which crimes committed against women go unpunished” as she opened a trailblazing centre in London for ending war rape…

Jolie Pitt called on LSE students to find answers to problems previous generations have brushed off as too difficult or not important.

She said: “There is no stable future for a world in which crimes committed against women go unpunished: a world in which young girls are unable to reach their potential; where children see their mothers disrespected, violated and murdered; where it is considered acceptable for a husband to reject his wife and the mother of his children because she was raped, or normal  for a woman to be forced to marry  her rapist.”…

At the centre scholars, activists and policy makers will study the best ways to successfully prosecute people who carry out sexual atrocities, and how to keep women safe after conflicts.

Crucially the centre will make sure women have a say in rebuilding their communities after they have been devastated by violence, and ensure they are involved in signing peace treaties.  (Complete article at the source.)
