Comedian’s Gig Cancelled Due to ‘Too Many Women’

British comedian Jenny Collier has gig cancelled; venue tells her there are ‘too many women’

A British comedian has had her planned stand-up gig cancelled by the venue — because she’s a woman.

Jenny Collier yesterday shared a screenshot of an email she received in regards to a Surrey comedy venue with her followers. In the email, Collier is informed that she’s no longer on the bill for a planned May 15 event.

“I’m really sorry but the venue have decided that they don’t want too many women on the bill,” explained the sender, “and unfortunately we need to take you out of this one.”

Jenny posted the email on Twitter, where it’s since been shared more than 5,000 times.

“We hope that this doesn’t cause any inconvenience.”

Collier shared the email with her 4,000 Twitter followers along with the caption, “This just happened.”

So far, the screenshot has been retweeted more than 5,000 times.

Collier received the email on the evening before International Women’s Day, a day in which countries across the world mark women’s economic, political, and social achievements.

While the comedian doesn’t name the Haslemere, Surrey venue, blogger Red Mister has determined that the Haslemere area has only one establishment hosting a comedy show on the night in question: Hemingways of Haslemere.

Twitter users, including several other comics, have been quick to leap to Collier’s defence, with many pointing out the irony that the email was sent so close to International Women’s Day.

US comedian Sarah Silverman is a vocal supporter of fellow females in the industry, and has regularly expressed disappointment that women are still marginalised in stand-up — that ‘Are women funny?’ still comes up as a question when she’s interviewed.

Silverman retweeted Collier’s email, adding a response of her own that perhaps best sums up the venue’s reasoning: “HAHAHAHA.”
