That is, I’m completely smitten with Shonda Rhimes’ show Scandal and its star, Kerry Washington–who also happens to be the first black woman to star in a TV show since the 70s (!). Kerry plays Olivia Pope, a Washington, D.C. ‘fixer’ based on Judy Smith, Deputy Press Secretary to President George H. Bush. Ms. Smith now runs her own consulting firm for crisis management, as does Ms. Pope in the television series.
I don’t watch much television and was late to the show, first realizing it might have greater depths than appeared from the show’s title when I caught an NPR interview with Judy Smith last spring. I watched the last five episodes of Season 2 on Hulu, and then went straight to Amazon to buy Season 1 and 2. I love the world they’ve created, with strong women and people of color and different sexual persuasions.
Regarding practically perfect Kerry, here are two interviews Kerry did with David Letterman, one before she gave a commencement address at GWU, and one after.
